TheFatGuy’s Participant Story for the Cooper River Bridge Run (CRBR)

I am Mike Campbell, AKA TheFatGuy. I weighed 360 pounds in February 2009 at almost 53 years old. I lost 150pounds between March 2009 and February 2010. I was overweight most of my adult life until my wife helped me realize I was in my own personal fire. She told me a story that eventually created the AHA moment I needed to start my journey to health and wellness. She helped me understand that I had to find MY way “Out of the Fire” if I was ever going to help anyone else in my life. I had numerous health issues and seven drugs to deal with those health issues. My story is much longer than this and you can find out more about it at fatguydiary.com.

I am now 57 years old and happy to say I am as fit and healthy as I have ever been in my life. I am off all medications and can do things I never thought possible. I sure never thought I would be part of the CRBR. Two years ago I walked/jogged the CRBR with a friend. I was happy to be in a position to encourage him on our trek! I have benefited from the Bridge Run in my volunteer work too. Eat Smart Move More Charleston Tri-County, which I Chair, received funding from CRBR to train Walk Leaders across our community to lead walking/running groups. CRBR also provided free registration to a number of children and adults involved in the Youth Marathon Program I direct as part of the Charleston Marathon.

I am blessed to have found my journey to health and wellness. We are all fortunate to have the Cooper River Bridge Run in Charleston!

  • Tested! And the journey continues….

TheFatGuy is proud of the fact that he has just celebrated the 5th Anniversary of the start of his journey. On March 2, 2009 he woke up, saw his wonderful wife off to work, and arrived at his AHA Moment. He started his journey and the spreadsheet he lived by that morning. He proceeded to name his spreadsheet Fat Guy Diary, so naming his website happened in about 5 seconds when he saved his excel document as FatGuyDiary! Hell of a branding story, isn’t it. A 5 second brainstorming session.

FAT GUY PIC FEB 2009His journey has been nothing short of amazing to him. He did things he never could do, would do, or think about doing. Things like:

    • Losing 150 pounds in a year (363 days to be exact, which is a story in itself!)
    • Giving up processed sugar for a year! (as well as the other bad white foods> bread, rice, potatoes)
    • Becoming Chair of Eat Smart Move More Charleston Tri-County (Never would have believed this one on 2009!)
    • Volunteer Director of a Youth Marathon Program ( a passion and unbelievable high seeing all those kids moving more)
    •  Radio and, TV appearances, website, free book, Total Gym Infomercial and the list goes on………………………………

The above are all great parts of TheFatGuy’s journey, but they are not the entire picture of his journey. You see a journey is never a straight line. He did not lose the weight in a straight line. He did not travel has journey in a straight line. Graphed out his journey would have many highs and lows with some level spots in between. Yes, TheFatGuy has been TESTED along his journey. He has been TESTED many times.

His most recent test came at Christmas when he ‘allowed’ himself to climb to 251 pounds! This is the highest weight he has seen since losing 150 in 2010. HE crossed a line that, quite frankly, scared him. This was a line he never thought he would cross again, heading in a very dangerous direction. Although he was working out regularly, getting stronger, and building muscle;  he was eating quite poorly.

He wants you to know he is tested and it is not always a ‘perfect’ journey. It is not always (if ever) a straight line to success. He feels the secret to a good journey is STAYING ON THE JOURNEY when you are TESTED. When TheFatGuy is seriously TESTED like this, what does he do?

The first thing he does is REBOOT! He looks at his journey like he does his computer. Let’s just stop, things aren’t going the way he wants, let’s REBOOT the journey. Let’s take a look at the factory settings that started the journey. What made this such an exciting and successful journey to begin with?

Some of the things he did took him back to simple (KISS- Keep it Simple Stupid) basic habits he had worked so hard to build into his life. So what did he think about between Christmas and New Year to reboot and start taking the pounds off and continue building the body and health he wants? Here are some of the basics:

    • He refocused on HAW daily. Waking up to honesty, attitude and water each day. Being totally honest with himself about his success and failure the previous day, choosing a positive attitude each day, and focusing on drinking water first thing each day to get in a minimum of ½ ounce of water per pound of body weight each day.
    • He worked to better schedule 5 small meals/snacks a day.
    • He mentally logged his intake, which is something he has been working at for a while. Physically logging is the best back stop when the mind starts letting you down in this area J (this has nothing to do with age, and more to do with a hectic life style)
    • He revisited TheFatGuy Rules and smiled as he read.
    • AND, he limited his process sugar intake (the white stuff . He has given it up for lent!)

PushupsAs he writes this post, TheFatGuy is 229 pounds and rocking his Push Up & Up training (more to come on that). Once again he has been TESTED, REBOOTED, and continues to travel his journey. It is a journey of highs and lows, twists and turns, and a few bumps. BUT, it is a journey he has maintained over 5 years. He has learned as much from the down times as the up and has continued to improve his quality of life.

Don’t let anyone (including yourself) hijack or sabotage your journey because it isn’t that perfect straight line or because you are TESTED. Own your ups and downs. Learn and grow from your ups and downs. AND, know the TESTS will come and REBOOT!

Note to ME and YOU: Own your journey, live your journey, and REBOOT when needed!

  • TheFatGuy goes to the dogs!

TheFatGuy has gone to the dogs and loves it!

4 Rescues Rescue TheFatGuyHe has 4 rescue dogs that have been key in his journey to health and wellness. He was just featured in an article for the Post and Courier by David Quick titled PET RX: Owning a pet can be a prescription for good health

As he started his journey in 2009, TheFatGuy was not moving at all. He was 360 pounds of ‘no motion’ Mike. As he worked to improve his diet first, he  pondered what he would do to ‘move more’. One of the things that came to mind was ‘walk the dogs’. He started by just walking the block and built from there. When you’re not moving at all, walking the dogs around the block is a big deal! So walking the dogs was one more step in the right direction of a journey that needed to be traveled.

Polly and TheFatGuy have four rescues that fill their days with unconditional love. Doing the article with David Quick made TheFatGuy really think about the relationship he had with their dogs. They have definitely helped him with dealing with stress in his life. The comfort and love they have provided over the past three years has been soooooo important to his journey. He and Polly have helped care for and lost both of her parents over the past three years. The dogs have been on every road trip and traveled every step of TheFatGuy journey. They have been there through the highs and lows, the stress and anxiety of dealing with the loss of a loved one.  Yes David’s interview with TheFatGuy made him think of just how important their 4 rescues are to his journey.

Check out David’s article http://www.postandcourier.com/article/20140113/PC1211/140119751/1002/pet-rx-owning-a-pet-can-be-a-prescription-for-good-health to best understand the benefits of adopting a dog to travel the journey with YOU! The Charleston Animal Society is a great place to start the relationship of a lifetime!

Note to ME and YOU: Get your rescue today! You could rescue YOU when you rescue them.

  • The Total Gym plus TheFatGuy = A Helluva Journey!

The Total Gym plus TheFatGuy = A Helluva Journey!

The Total Gym has been a constant companion for TheFatGuy during his journey. He purchased the 1700 model in the summer of 2006 after he ruptured the Achilles tendon on his left leg. He thought if he got this machine with a 325 pound weight limit, it would be incentive to stay below 325 pounds while recovering from this injury and the limits it posed. He weighed 320 pounds at the time.

WELL, with the idea of NOT going over 325 pounds planted in his head coupled with the inability to commit to taking care of himself at this time, he barely touched the Total Gym before he soared past 325! And it sat there as a reminder of failing to commit to himself and a reminder of what he needed to do to commit to himself. He had it folded away for quite some time. TheFatGuy loved the Total Gym commercials, all of the success stories, and seeing Chuck & Christie making it look so easy. He was just not ready to commit to ‘taking care of himself’.

As we now know, TheFatGuy, got his wake up call in 2009 at 360 pounds. He committed to his journey, his new eating habits, and his new exercise habits. AND, he smiled as he started using the Total Gym 1700! He worked to try many new things, but the Total Gym was the one CONSTANT companion on his journey. He wanted to Keep it Simple (KISS) as he restructured his life and the Total Gym was the perfect tool to do just that. He had it sitting in the back room of his house and had various routines set up so he could always get a workout in his day no matter how much or little time he had in his schedule.

TheFatGuy lost 150 pounds in a year (March 2009 to February 2010). He quickly found himself in the best shape of his life and continued to get in even better shape. He challenged himself by scaling the bleachers of a local High School stadium getting as high as 150 straight reps of going up 17 bleachers and down 34 steps. And he challenged himself in many other ways. All of this made possible by his commitment to his journey and the help of his Total Gym, the gym that never closes!

The Total Gym became so important to his journey that TheFatGuy and his wife purchased a Total Gym XLS for their Christmas present in early December 2012. That is when the fun really began! He loved working out on this newer version of the Total Gym and loved trying all of the new routines that came with it.

Then came the contact from the producer of the Total Gym commercials. He had seen a post online about TheFatGuy’s use of the Total Gym and the new purchase of the XLS. They talked on the phone a number of times throughout the holidays in 2012 and then he said “I want to come to Charleston and film you with your Total Gym.” TheFatGuy loved the idea.

SO, on Sunday, 1/6/13, TheFatGuy had a 4 hour ‘shoot’ at his house with all of the lights, camera, and action that go with it. He had a great time with the producer and crew; and had no problem talking about his journey to health, wellness, and fitness.

TheFatGuy had no idea when the commercial would air and had actually forgotten about it until late October of this year when people started contacting him about seeing him on a commercial with Chuck Norris. He has not met Chuck, but loves the idea of being on the same commercial with him.

You can see a main piece of his commercial debut here:

Note to ME and YOU: Commit to yourself FIRST, and find a tool like the Total Gym to make that commitment work!

  • What do the SUBWAY FIT FOR LIFE 15 DAY CHALLENGE, Cane Bay Elementary, TheFatGuy, and Tony Stark have in common?

What do the SUBWAY FIT FOR LIFE 15 DAY CHALLENGE, Cane Bay Elementary, TheFatGuy, and Tony Stark have in common? This question jumped out at TheFatGuy as he was leaving Cane Bay this morning. These were ALL topics of discussion between TheFatGuy and 2 groups of students at Cane Bay Elementary.

    Jim-Pants-Photo

TheFatGuy was paired up with the school as their Fit Buddy to take on the SUBWAY FIT FOR LIFE 15 DAY CHALLENGE. It is a great pre-holiday challenge for elementary and middle school students and their families. TheFatGuy loves sharing his story with kids and helping turn the tide on childhood obesity. He had a wonderful time sharing his journey and answering those tough questions only kids ask.

OH, Tony Stark?  Yep, that one surprised TheFatGuy, too! As he was finishing up with the first group one of the students said “You’re like Tony Stark”. A number more chimed in and said “yeh, Tony Stark”. TheFatGuy did not know who Tony Stark was so he went on chatting with the kids as they left. The second group of students started making the same remarks about him and Tony Stark as he moved to Q&A. He asked the teacher and she just shrugged. One student hollared out, “You know, Iron Man!”. Talk about starting TheFatGuy’s day off right! Being compared to Iron Man is not too shabby for this 57 year old recovering fat guy J WOW, from 360 pounds to Iron Man! He will take that.

So now you know how the four items got connected. TheFatGuy promised the Cane Bay students he would put all of the info from his talk in his blog. That way they and their families could find ALL of the resources necessary to complete a successful challenge.

Here is what TheFatGuy committed to for his personal challenge:

    • NO processed SUGAR!
    • Some type of Aerobic exercise EVERY day (walk, run, bike, whatever)
    • Track Water intake to assure ½ ounce per pound of body weight a day. (4th grade students 8 cups boys, 7 cups girls)
    • Lose weight over next 15 days (which if he does above will happen)

The students will work to eat fruits and vegetables every day (French fries will not count here). They will work to meet their water intake needs each day. They will be more active each day and limit their Screen Time (TV, video games, computer). And here are some of the resources they can use to start and maintain those healthy habits:

Note to ME and YOU: Be a Fit Buddy for a child! AND stop Childhood Obesity NOW!

  • Why TheFatGuy rebuilt his Website…. ummm….. Office…

    Why TheFatGuy rebuilt his Website…. ummm….. Office…

TheFatGuy rolled out his new website this past week thanks to much help from Stephen Parris. The new logo he designed is better than TheFatGuy could have imagined!

Why did TheFatGuy push to rebuild his website? Several things came into play as he looked at this question. He needed:

    • to get better ORGANIZED.
    • a better way to highlight and serve the organizations he volunteers with in Charleston and South Carolina.
    • a way to best highlight giving away his book, “Fat Guy Diary: Out of the Fire!” to help people start and travel their journey’s to health, wellness, and happiness.
    • a way to highlight his newest career of working to help people.
    • an office and the website would be it!
    • To Keep It Simple Stupid (KISS)

Organized: TheFatGuy needed this as much as anything. Becoming overwhelmed and unable to focus on his own wellbeing is what got him to 360 pounds in the first place. He needed to find a way to best organize all of his efforts so he could still Take Care of HIM and the people closest to HIM in his life.

Serving Organizations: He enjoyed his efforts to serve multiple organizations, but did not feel he was highlighted and promoting the organizations as best as he could. Now it’s EASY!

Book Give Away!: TheFatGuy wants to reach as many people as possible with this FREE book. He wants to help people Out of their own personal fire! He is hoping that giving away his book, his personal story to health, wellness, and fitness will help someone, anyone.

New career: Well TheFatGuy and his wife have to eat and pay the bills. He could not work for someone else and continue his volunteer work at its present level; SO, he is using his redesigned website to start his career and maintain his volunteer work. He has multiple ways to help others while making a living. Check out the pages under How TheFatGuy Can Help you! On his website.

An Office: He is no longer attached to ‘brick and mortar’. His office is his website. It’s open 24/7 and can be accessed anywhere and anytime. He loves it!

KISS: Yep, Keep It Simple Stupid rang out in his ears as he worked this strategy to rebuild his website.

Check out TheFatGuy and his new office/website. He is blessed to have found many positive things in his life and wants to share them with YOU!

Note to ME and YOU: Do what works for you and always give it a little KISS!
